Boudoir lingerie is a wide ranging subject – there are so many options out there. One essential item that you absolutely must have for your portrait session though, is a great bra.
Now, by ‘great’ I don’t mean a shimmering piece of satin and lace, so beautiful you hardly dare wear it and so flimsy you hardly can wear it.
No, I mean ‘bra that does its job well’.

The first thing to address is your comfort zone. It could be that you’re planning to cover up as much as possible – you’re thinking corsets, basques, babydolls (I’ve known people to wonder if they can get away with a onesie – no!). These all have their place and I know what you’re thinking – coverage. Rare is the woman who absolutely loves her stomach and wants to show it off, lots. Women that are this confident, I salute you!
Personally, that unflattering way my stomach has of hanging over skimpy knickers puts me firmly in the corset camp, most of the time.
However, there are plenty of images that require the excellent job that a bra (and, pretty much only a bra) does, and it really does not matter whether you like your tummy or not – it’s not going to be in these images.
boudoir lingerie
Boudoir lingerie is all about having a variety of outfits that work well for you in different poses. And for many women, lying back on a bed/chaise longue is a pose that requires support. When you’re trying on your boudoir lingerie, lie down on a bed and see what happens.
If your breasts disappear, falling gently sideways and trying to hide in your armpits – that is not a look your are going to love. If the bra looks fab when you’re standing up, bring it along anyway, but you need other options for lying down images.
So, try bra 2 – lie down on a bed. Everything still in place and pointing towards the ceiling? Fab! Now scoot along the bed until your head is partly hanging backwards over the edge. If your breasts are starting to follow (ie when you’re lying backwards, they’re slightly wandering towards your neck), because the cup shape of your bra doesn’t prevent them, it may not work quite as well for you as another style. The larger your chest, the more likely you are to need a full cup style of bra for lying down images.

Boudoir lingerie – we never said it was easy! 😉

Everything you need to bring along with you gets talked through in your pre-session chat, so don’t worry that you’re going to come along for your portrait session unprepared, you’re really not.
