All corsets are not created equal
If you're considering wearing a corset for your boudoir portrait session, think about the look you're trying to achieve.
If it's a very cinched-in waist look, to transform your figure to hourglass proportions, I have to warn you that 'fashion' corsets may not necessarily achieve this look for you.
Some corsets with plastic boning can flip outwards at the bottom - so just where you're wanting to create a flat, smooth outline over your stomach, they're actually bending outwards instead - and often no amount of pulling them in is going to make a difference.
Many corsets will come with a modesty panel at the back, so they can be loosened out a little. Many won't, so you're going to have to ensure you've got a really good fit in this instance.
Think really hard about the neckline too - if you want to emphasise your chest, straight across necklines can work well, but there definitely is such thing as too much of a good thing - if your chest is ample anyway, go for a sweetheart or plunge style - otherwise there might be too much chest pushed up, in an unflattering way (if I try a straight neckline, I essentially look like I have turned my chest into a shelf - not alluring, as it happens).
Be prepared to try a few on (and don't assume the bargain from Ebay, winging its way from China, is going to be perfect).
Steel boned corsets are almost certainly going to do a much better job - and almost certainly going to cost more. However, think of it this way - if you don't like how you look in your corset, because it doesn't sit properly, then you're not going to love your images. It's better to ditch the idea of wearing a corset, rather than going for one that doesn't fit well or flatter.
If you're not sure whether you're looking at a corset or a basque, click here for a previous post explaining the difference.
For corsets on a budget, take a look at Corset Story - they have fashion corsets through to steel boned corsets and often have offers.
The Burgandy Boudoir have a wide range, and also offer a made to measure service.
If you're really ready to push the boat out, and want a fabulous corset as outerwear, you could always go bespoke.
